Extension Aftercare
Brushing
-
brush in the morning & evening
-
WetBrush is the recommended brush to use
-
hold the top seam of your weft firmly against your head before brushing to avoid pulling & tension
-
do not brush directly over the top seam of your wefts as this can cause permanent damage to the wefts
-
avoid snagging & pulling your front corners while brushing; hold the front corners very firmly when brushing, especially on wet hair
-
If you have more than one row, be sure to separate your rows and brush in between to avoid matting
-
a boar (soft) bristle brush can be used for smoothing your hair over your extensions when pulling it up
Washing
-
always brush before washing to remove tangles
-
clip your natural hair up from your extensions before wetting your hair and wash/rinse separately; if you have more than one row it is recommended to shampoo and rinse each row separately
-
wash in a gentle motion above & below rows; do not scrub vigorously as this can cause damage to your weft tops
-
rinse very thoroughly to prevent build up along the weft line
-
focus on shampooing the scalp & conditioning the mids/ends; avoid shampooing the mids/ends of the extensions often
-
when conditioning, split into 2 pigtails, apply to mids/ends, then gently comb through with WetBrush to thoroughly saturate through the extension hair & your natural hair
-
deep condition 1-2x monthly
-
towel dry by squeezing from the ends up; avoid rubbing the towel over the root area or wrapping your hair tightly in a towel
Recommended shampoo/conditioners: Goldie Locks, Pureology Hydrate, Kevin Murphy Hydrate, Kevin Murphy Angel Wash
Blow Drying
-
blow dry your roots & weft tops thoroughly within 30 minutes of washing; prolonged moisture in the top seam of your extensions can permanently damage your wefts
-
clip up each section to expose your row and blow dry the top seam of your extensions for 3-5 minutes until completely dry
-
attaching the concentrator nozzle to your blow dryer will help to dry the roots quickly and thoroughly
-
you can let the rest of your hair air dry as long as the roots are 100% dry
-
hair should be approximately 75% dry before using a round brush or blow dry brush to avoid excessive tension or heat damage
Products/Styling
-
always use leave in conditioner on damp hair after washing
-
use a moisturizing serum in the mids/ends of your hair daily
-
dry shampoo can be used to extend time between washes or over weft tops before exercising to help absorb sweat
-
ALWAYS use heat protectant before blow drying, curling, & flat ironing; excess heat will cause breakage & color fading to your extensions
-
use a max heat of 360°
-
avoid using repairing, strengthening, keratin, or bonding products on extensions
-
slightly loosen your front corners if you feel any pulling or tension while wearing a ponytail or bun
-
avoid clipping through your weft tops with claw clips or bobby pins; try to clip above, below, or between your rows to avoid damage to your wefts
Recommended leave ins: Goldie Locks leave in, Kevin Murphy Untangled spray, Pureology 21 Benefits
Recommended serums: Goldie Locks Signature Serum, Kevin Murphy Young Again serum
Recommended heat protection: Kenra Blow Dry Spray, Kenra Color Maintenance thermal spray, Sexy Hair Protect Me
Things to avoid...
-
sunscreens containing avobenzone; these can permanently stain extensions pink/orange; use mineral sunscreens ONLY
-
ocean water & pool water; if you are planning to get your hair wet, saturate your hair with fresh water & leave in conditioner first then tightly braid or wrap in a tight bun; wash and deep condition ASAP after
-
purple shampoo; if extensions are yellowing use a very small amount of purple shampoo mixed in with your normal shampoo or schedule a toner appointment
-
any and all non professional products
-
hard water; mineral build up can discolor & dry out extension hair; purchase a shower head filter if you have hard water
-
prolonged sun exposure; sun can cause color fading; the recommended leave in products listed above contain UV protection, but it's still good to limit time in direct sunlight
-
old or cheap styling tools; these can stain and burn your hair
-
self tanner, tanning beds, & smoking; all can stain blonde hair as well
Sleeping
-
apply dry shampoo to roots & serum to ends before bed and brush through to remove tangles from the day
-
sleep on a silk/satin pillowcase or wrap your hair in a silk scarf to prevent matting, frizz & preserve your style
-
pull your hair into a low pony/bun with a scrunchie or loosely braid before bed
-
NEVER SLEEP WITH WET HAIR!
